Religious Liberties

Seventh-day Adventists cherish and promote the Biblical and American principles of freedom of worship. Adventists believe in obedience to civil governments (Romans 13:1), but believe that religion is a matter of truth revealed by God through His word. When earthly and heavenly governments clash, the government of God must be obeyed (Acts 5:29; Matthew 22:21; John 18:36). Throughout their history, SDAs have suffered for their Sabbatarian beliefs. This, coupled with American and theological principles, has taught SDAs that separation of church and state is the will of God. Church-state separation must not, however, be a state hostile to religion, but simply one in which worshippers are free to worship as they believe right. Only when the church is free from government interference can it be truly pure and accomplish the duty that God has ordained it to do: spread the good news about Jesus!
